Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infects nearly all babies by the age of 2. In adults and children, RSV usually causes moderate-to-severe cold symptoms. But in premature babies and children with certain other medical conditions, it can develop into a serious respiratory illness requiring hospitalization.

Each year, an estimated 125,000 infants in the United States are hospitalized with severe RSV disease, the leading cause of infant hospitalization.^1-2 Severe RSV infections may cause up to 500 infant deaths annually in the United States.³ Premature babies or those with certain heart problems or chronic lung disease have an especially high risk.
